Inspirational women

Her books have enticed millions of children and adults across the globe, and inspired a series of amazing  blockbuster movies – and now JK Rowling has been named the most influential woman in the UK by leading magazine editors.

The list of 100 influential women was complied to mark the 100th anniversary of the National Magazine Company, whose titles include Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar and Company. And British author JK Rowling, who dreamed up the idea for Harry Potter whilst on a train trip from Manchester to London, has topped the list for her writing skills, tenacity to succeed and philanthropic nature.  The 45 year old, who is worth an estimated £560 million, has recently donated £10 million to set up a new multiple sclerosis research clinic in Edinburgh.

Lindsay Nicholson, editor of Good Housekeeping, said: ‘Everyone felt J K Rowling was the one with the most influence across the widest audience. As a single parent who managed to cope and pull herself out of poverty and create a massive entertainment empire on the way, she is very inspiring. Rowling is very careful about the way she uses her fame and is very true to herself. She didn’t pursue power, fame and money in a conventional way but by writing her thoughts in a café while her baby slept.’

So who else made the list? The top ten influential women were:

  1. JK Rowling, author
  2. Victoria Beckham, singer turned fashion designer
  3. Her Majesty the Queen
  4. Shami Chakrabharti, director of human rights pressure group Liberty
  5. Cheryl Cole, singer
  6. Samantha Cameron, wife of the PM
  7. Cath Kidston, designer
  8. Kate Moss, supermodel
  9. Dame Vivienne Westwood, fashion designer
  10. Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, paralympian

A big congrats to all the inspirational ladies that made the list! But what do you think of the top 10? Tell us what you think!
